26 May 2011 The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) in partnership with the European Commission hosted an international conference on food security called "Food for everyone - towards a global deal" on Monday 23 May in Brussels.
On this occasion Andris Piebalgs, Commissioner for Development of the European Commission, said that “we should focus on small scale agriculture” such as “co-operatives and farmer co-operation”.
Co-operatives have been mentioned by different stakeholders as good examples of smallholder producers’ organisations, as a form of joining forces, necessary to strengthen the negotiation power of farmers to get fair prices and be competitive.
